Route: Walk begins and ends at Annascaul lake.
From Annascaul Lake we make our way on the old track to Macha na Bò with An Com Dubh and An Ré Mhòr on either side of us and with a very steady and easy ascent of just over 300m. Soon we will have views of Beenoskee and Stradbally. Overlooking Macha na Bò we will have stunning views out over Brandon Bay. We will descend to Macha na Bò and have our lunch at the ruins of an old farmhouse. Following lunch we will return via the same route.
Duration: 4 – 4.5 hours approx.
Grade/Pace: Easy to Moderate walk with an easy pace.
Distance: 10km
Gear: Hiking Boots and full weather gear is recommended.
History/Mythology: Walking on this ancient bronze age path, along Garryivagh River, we have stories of Cù Chulainn fighting an ugly giant; Crom Dubh sending his fiercest bull to be weighed against St. Brendan’s Ave Maria on parchment; Mary Macha na Bò; the Plain of the Cow, a magic cow with endless milk; the Shrieker of the Glenn na hUaha; the Step of the Wild Dog Wolf (Wolf Step 1710).
