Overview
About the Walk
This loop walk starts at Bernard Collins Memorial car park. It is a Moderate walk with a climb of 130m. We follow the purple/red trail way markings. We reach a height of 273m with glorious vistas of Carrantuohill, Ireland’s highest mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Mount Brandon. This is a place where football Munster finals were played.
History and Mythology
Once this valley was covered in oak wood and sheltered many famous Irish heroes, during the Desmond Rebellion and the Irish Civil War. Gerald the last Earl of Desmond, hid here until one of his own men betrayed him for a handful of silver and he was beheaded in 1583 after months of hiding in dense woods – a plaque now marks the spot where his blood stained the earth. The loop takes us by the site of Desmond Castle; the Ravens Glen waterfall; and on to the ruins of Sean Thaigh Og’s cabin where, in 1916 Robert Monteith evaded his enemies after the unsuccessful landing of arms at Banna Strand.
This route and the hideaway was taken by Stephen Fuller in March1923 when he was sole survivor of the Ballyseedy massacre. John Lenihan, World Champion Irish Mountain Runner, trained here on this route.

I spent 4 wonderful hours with Maurice Galway showing me the beautiful beaches and sets for my favourite film Ryan’s Daughter. He has not only monumental knowledge but also is a very charming gentleman who made my visit to Dingle very special.

“Cannot recommend Dingle Film Walks enough. Last sunday we spent an afternoon hiking around Dunquin, chatting about history, film, life, the universe and everything! Maurice Galway is so knowledgeable and passionate about film and the local area, and his interest and curiosity in other people makes this a uniquely special tour”. #ItsAlwaysSunnyInDingle

“Maurice’s Dingle Film Walk Tour was a really magical experience. Even though I’ve travelled to the Dingle Peninsula many times over the years, I have never received such an informative and insightful perspective on the history of the place, particularly in the context of the films that have been shot there.”
Colm Tobin

“My first time in Ireland and while I was blown away by all the sights and sounds and people of the Emerald Isle, the Dingle Film Walk with Maurice was the highlight! Such a lovely hike through gorgeous countryside and coastline listening to amazing stories about local film shoots, history, life, all the things. A fascinating fellow and a uniquely beautiful landscape — truly a day for the books! Can’t recommend enough!”

“Easy parking and a great meeting place (with toilets and coffee) made for a good start. The intro explained what was ahead and the walk itself was very accessible. What views and wildness! And I cannot say enough about Maurice’s knowledge of the films and the people who made them – he has so many stories. A five star experience indeed!”
Mary McGillycuddy
-
“I highly recommend this tour to anyone who has even a slight interest in film, not just because of the fund of information Maurice has on the films that have been made in the area but also as a fabulous walking expedition around the Dingle Area. You will walk through places of scenic beauty that are not on the regular walking tours of the area, looking out on panoramic views of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. “
